Over 200 works of student art were on display at the Mineola School District Art Show, which was held on April 10 at Mineola High School.

Parents, friends and faculty browsed the exhibit, which featured artwork created by Mineola K-12 learners from each of the five district schools. The styles represented included paint, drawing, sculpture and mixed media.

Congratulations to all the learners who contributed their unique talent and style to this spectacular show and thank you to the amazing art educators who motivate, engage and inspire our students to express themselves through art each and every day.

At the April. 10 meeting, the Mineola Board of Education was proud to recognize our learners for exceptional achievements in science research, art and athletics.

First, the Board honored learners from Hampton Street, Jackson Avenue and Mineola Middle School who participated in the Stony Brook University Institute for Advanced Computational Science competition.

Next, the Board recognized members of the Mineola Middle School “Robo Shark” robotics team for their success in the First Lego League competition.

Surrounded by their proud art teachers, student artists took center stage as the Board honored winners of the New York State Art Teacher’s Association Flag Design contest and learners selected for the Art Supervisors Association All County art exhibit.

Finally, the Board recognized Mineola High School fall sports student athletes who were received All County and All Conference honors.

We are #MineolaProud to highlight each of these amazing learners for their achievements!

Fourth graders in the Jackson Avenue Garden Club are preparing to plant the vegetables they've been successfully sprouting, while they also plant more seeds that will be part of the summer harvest!

The learners prepped the soil in the beds, including removing weeds and dumping them in the compost bin, while carefully making sure not to uproot the perennials that are coming back to life.

Everyone is looking forward to a big crop coming soon including carrots, beans, dill, lavender and more!

On March 28, Mineola High School student musicians from the eighth grade Orchestra class brought their violins, cellos and double basses to Jackson Avenue School for a special collaboration with the fourth grade Orchestra club.

During the visit, the high school visitors were paired with younger players for a rehearsal session where they acted as mentors, helping the novice players with their form and tone as they prepared for a performance.

Finally, it was showtime and the musical collaboration came to life in the school gym in front of an enthusiastic audience of third graders, teachers and administrators.

The show began with the two orchestras joining together as one and performing the song “Impulse” by American composer Brian Balmages. Next, third grader Grant Koo took center stage to perform his level 3 NYSSMA piece “Gavotte.” Finally, the eighth grade orchestra closed the show with the song “The Carnival of The Animals: Royal March of The Lion” by Camille Saint-Saens.

Sarah Ramsingh, a music teacher at Jackson Avenue and Mineola High School, is thrilled with the opportunity to bring her learners together for this collaboration. “I am in the unique position where I can actually witness the evolution of my students, from first picking up their instrument in third grade, to becoming focused and enthusiastic teens with exceptional talent, poise and confidence,” said Ms. Ramsingh. “Combing the forces of my younger, impressionable learners with those who can help guide and share experience with them is truly a pleasure, and the music they make together is sensational!”

Jackson 4th graders had a hands-on lesson in energy transfer and conversion during a recent "Light It Up" activity in Ms. Sotsky's STEAM Lab.

In the investigation, the learners teams up and applied scientific ideas to design, test and refine a circuit that transfers energy and converts it from one form to another.

Using just 2 D- cell batteries and a box full of connector wires, miniature light bulbs and a switch, the groups tested different methods until they were able to get all three bulbs lit!

It took some trial and error and troubleshooting, but each team was successful in making the connection!
